Essaouira's 18th-century manor began life as a British surfer's auberge in 1988, named Villa Maroc quite simply because it was his villa in Morocco. Now under thoughtful new ownership, the original windswept spirit is entirely intact: whitewashed rooms, blue-painted woodwork, and the constant sound of the Atlantic wind. The rooftop terrace at sunset is the address's great and lasting pleasure.

a long weekend, a week
Started in 1988 by a British surfer as his Essaouira villa. Still here.

It’s generous and bursting with Moroccan flavours. Every day is a new speciality. We’re fond of the Berber scrambled eggs, paired with baghrirs drizzled with local honey for those with a sweet tooth. (Baghrirs are also called “Crêpes 1000 trous” because of their many tiny holes.)

The medina’s souks are beautiful, but the rural ones are something else. Here, local producers come together to showcase their best products. The most charming part? Every rural souk hides a little secret: the tastiest scrambled eggs, the finest goat cheese… we do love a good surprise.
12:30 PM
Villa Maroc can point you to a hidden spot for freshly cooked fish with colourful salads, perfect for a quick bite. If you prefer to stay in the Medina, head to Mimti — they serve Moroccan cuisine just like grandma used to make, with generous dishes to share.

Essaouira is a prime spot for water sports. Surf or kite, it’s up to you. Layer up the SPF.

They have a spa here, and everyone raves about their Oriental Delight ritual. After some time in the hammam, enjoy a thorough scrub with soft soap, followed by a massage using their own Argan oil.
7:30 PM
After a drink on the rooftop to catch the sunset, head to Villa Maroc’s restaurant. The menu changes daily, based on the best produce the chefs find at the local market. If you fancy a fresh fish dish, ask for the Dorade with Citrus – they’ll cook it especially for you.

The menus are plotted and planned around local produce sourced from the market. In turn, they’re supporting producers and their craft.
They produce their own olive oil and Argan oil to be used in the kitchen and in the spa for treatments.
