Slowly rise in time for breakfast. Its fresh and local direction makes the most of food ingredients. In-season fruits, homemade cheeses, crunchy bread with soft tomato jam and lots of crumbling pasteis de nata.

The beach is only a 10-minute drive away (the team will take you) but we have a big crush on the pool for basking in the Melides sun. We love the bold red-and-white striped towels that say ‘Loubis on the beach’ too, maybe the best pool towel ever?

Keep it local with O Melidense for salty sardines, or, just a short drive away is Tia Rosa, well-loved for its duck and rice.

Not far from the hotel (which means you can carry more back), you'll find two must-hit shops with coveted pieces to bring home – Vida Dura for homeware and Noemina for prints and clothing. Lunch breaks are serious business here though, so keep an eye on opening hours.

Head back to the hotel for a drink at the bespoke silver bar (as a reward for the successful shopping...). Lazy snacking is advised but save room for dinner...

The hotel’s restaurant Xtian knows exactly what it’s doing. Strong flavours and traditional dishes quickly win you over. We love the porco à alentejana (pork with clams).
