Right on Piazza di Santa Maria Novella in Florence, The Place excels at being a genuine home from home for a smart and well-travelled set. Just 20 rooms in a beautifully restored palazzo; the service is personal and the design quietly excellent. Breakfast on the terrace overlooking the piazza, then a ten-minute walk to the Uffizi. The city at the doorstep; the noise kept very much at bay.

a long weekend, a week
Just 20 rooms on Piazza Santa Maria Novella. Returns as a second home.
city trippers, culture vultures, design lovers
8:12 AM
The city is slow to rise, with most shops and markets opening mid-morning, so enjoy a coffee in the lounge before the day starts. Hold out on breakfast because lunch will be a good one.
9:19 AM
Line up in the queue or pre-book tickets to see the Basilica of Santa Maria Novella. It’s a feat of Romanesque architecture, and inside is Masaccio’s Holy Trinity and The Crucifix by Giotto, two very impressive works of Italian art.
11:36 AM
Much-loved shop Officina Profumo-Farmaceutic di Santa Maria Novella is right around the corner – the eau de cologne is worshiped for a reason.
12:30 PM
Wander the streets, passing the Duomo, Piazza della Signoria (stopping at Caffè Rivoire for a cappuccino, standing up at the bar if you need another pick me up) and over to Vini e Vecchi Sapori for lunch (do book). It’s chaotic, and loud, with Madonna blasting in the background but the food is excellent. Pappardelle with duck ragu, shaved zucchini and parmesan salad, carpaccio di manzo…and vino too.
2:46 PM
Walk-off lunch – a little like Venice, Florence is best felt getting lost down the streets. It’s busy, but the Ponte Vecchio is magical in its own right. We love Santo Spirito, the other side of the Arno. It’s more local, more hip, and there are lots of little shops working away with textiles or shoemaking to stop and stare at.
4:43 PM
See the house of the Medici. You can go into Palazzo Pitti, but on a warm day, getting stuck into the Boboli Gardens is the best spot to be. You’ll appreciate the views over the city too.
7:00 PM
Drop off your shopping bags and grab a spot on the terrace for a Negroni or something stronger. It’s great people watching too.
8:30 PM
Another reservation essential restaurant, but Trattoria Sostanza is a hole-in-wall wonder. Sizzling buttery chicken, tortellini in brodo, and mini wild strawberries for dolce. It’s quick, you’ll be in and out in about an hour.
