Two hours from Lisbon on a working estate that has belonged to the same family for 200 years, São Lourenço do Barrocal is simultaneously a hotel, farm, winery, and olive grove. The rooms are beautiful, the food is estate-grown, and the pace of life here is calibrated entirely around slowing down. Horse riding, vineyard walks, and long lunches in the shade. A deeply restorative and considered address.

Crusty bread from Alentejo, poached pears and colourful juices. Whilst we love room service, the farm is too pretty to not explore so head over to the restaurant for the farmhouse feel.

When the heat kicks in, find a place by the pool. First one in…

Take it easy, there’s no need to overstretch yourselves. And we are suckers for a long shady lunch. Chunky bread soup, traditional chickpea stew and barbecued meats.
3:25 PM
Bees are loved here. Check out their beekeeping set up (you can get involved)– the honey you probably had at breakfast was made from one of the five hives right here.
6:46 PM
It would be rude to not try some of the wines from the estate, it is a working winery after all. Plus, Portuguese grapes are juicy and flavourful. Find a spot on the terrace or book into a wine-tasting class in the estate’s old communal oven.
8:00 PM
Check with the front desk if the Hortelão restaurant is open during your stay, they can help you find a table if it’s busy. This is the best place to dine on hot summer nights for slow-food and farm-to-fork plates.

Owner José follows his family's tradition of living off the land: cultivating wine, making olives oils and vegetables directly on the estate.
Why go far when you can pick right from the garden? The hotel prioritises sourching ingredients locally, with a lot being from their own market garden.
