The Japanese countryside of Toyama Prefecture is where Rakudo An is built around the concept of 'dotoku': the synergistic value created by the harmony between people and nature. Just five rooms, all facing the forest and the river. The kaiseki dinners use ingredients foraged from the surrounding land and prepared with the precision and care the tradition demands. Deeply considered and very beautiful.

slow travel, country living
8:16 AM
Keep in pace with the peace and quiet. It’s about calming the mind and slowing down. Coffee comes serviced in beautiful earthenware.
10:00 AM
Master the art of Japanese calligraphy with a local temple priest. Practice traditional brush techniques and discover your kanji name (kanji characters with plenty of meaning) – which is personally signed by the priest on your own work. A special way to spend an afternoon.
12:30 PM
Check out Cave Yunoki – a Michelin-starred, French fusion spot housed in a 100-year-old storehouse of an old sake brewery. It’s on the fancier side, and popular, so reserve in advance. It’s a set menu with plenty of theatre (watch the chefs in action) and good wine. You will need a taxi or car to get here – the hotel team can help.
4:00 PM
You're in the middle of a seriously creative community, so get crafting. Visit the workshop of Kumekazu Shimatani, a craftsman dedicated to creating Buddhist orin gongs. Overseen by his son, Yoshinori Shimatani, watch the artisans in the studio work and try your hand at creating a Suzugami plate.
8:00 PM
Dinner tonight is at Il Clima, overlooking the rice paddies. The menu changes depending on the season, but it's guaranteed to be fresh (Toyama produce, fish from the sea of Japn). We love the creative fusion touch.
10:07 PM
Unwind in the library with a nightcap from the bar – try a Smoky Whiskey Highball, or discover local sake from Wakatsuru Shuzo.

They work with local farmers for the best produce, including craft beer (made with organic barley and hops) and snacks, ensuring they support sustainable practices.
It’s really about craft: the walls are adorned with two paintings titled 'color beginning' (a pair of works) by contemporary artist Rei Naito, along with small wooden sculptures of ‘people.'
