From two siblings (one the founder of cool Casa Bonay in Barcelona), Portella is a fresh take on a 17th-century house in Palma de Mallorca's old town. Before its hotel transformation it was a private home; you can feel that history in the proportions and the original stone throughout. The 17 rooms are individually designed; the rooftop has some of the city's best views.

a long weekend, a week

almost local, slow travel
8:26 AM
Slowly rise in time for breakfast downstairs. It’s laidback, local and homely. Don't rush though, they serve breakfast until 1 pm. You must also get the orange juice – the citrus fruit in Palma are incredible.
10:09 AM
You couldn't be better placed to get out and about. You're near all the best spots, from the old town or the Bellver Castle (very nice views of Palma and the bay). Grab a coffee at Mistral (serious specialty roasters) to keep you fuelled.
12:45 PM
You’re in Spain so a tapas lunch is necessary. We like at La Rosa Vermuteria & Colmado. It's fairly central, with a menu packed full of traditional plates. Try to sit at the bar and order the grilled artichoke hearts.
3:22 PM
Beach time. Stay close by with a trip to Can Pere Antoni Beach, or jump in your car and drive a little further afield to the likes of Deia for more hilly wandering.
7:30 PM
Dinner at Bar La Sang (small plates, very local) followed by a drink at the very fun, and very OTT El Camino. If you're there on a Friday evening, we've heard they shower guests with petals (seriously…).
9:06 PM
Slip upstairs to the rooftop for island scenes and a nightcap. Port and tonic anyone?
