Margate has become one of England's most interesting coastal destinations, and Margate House keeps things properly characterful: a traditional Kentish townhouse with warmth and personality that bigger hotels rarely achieve. The Turner Contemporary gallery is minutes away; Dreamland is around the corner. Fish and chips on the seafront is of course mandatory. The beach and the town are in very good form.

Pig up a fig leaf ice latte from Forts Cafe for your walk along the coast over to Botany Bay. The rock formations are pretty cool to check out.

Pick-up provisions at Picnic Deli: chicken caesar focaccia sandwiches, fancy crisps, garlicky olives and a soda pop. Take to the beach for a nice spread; just watch the seagulls.

The Turner Contemporary is one of the best art galleries in the country. It’s a modern, light-filled space often with displays and exhibitions of up-and-coming artists. Tracey Emin is a big fan.

Grab a glass of something funky and natural at Sète, a really nice wine bar. Hit up their apéro hour from 4-6 pm Wednesday through Saturday for a £5 glass of wine.
8:45 PM
Dinner at Bottega Caruso. A family-run Italian shop and deli right in the middle of Margate. It’s hearty, homely, and totally delicious. Feast on their homemade pickles (giardiniera), sausage ziti and a stewy bowl of greens and beans.

Products from nearby beauty and skincare brand Haeckels (they’re also huge eco activitis and made waves using ingredients from the sea and beach) are in the rooms.
