A reimagined two-bedroom machiya (traditional wooden townhouse) in Kyoto, brought back to life by architect Uoya Shigenori. Dark wood beams, tatami floors, beautiful ceramics, a zen garden, and an onsen-style bath. You have the whole place to yourself, with breakfast drop-offs and local tips on hand. The open kitchen is sleek, crafted with traditional Japanese techniques.

slow travel, city trippers
8:02 AM
They tend not to rise too early in Kyoto, but if jet lag hits, head downstairs to the kitchen, where there are local coffee drip bags. Wait for breakfast to be delivered.
9:56 AM
Walk around the Higashiyama Ward before it gets busy, and then have a quick pit stop at Loose Kyoto for a cup of coffee and one of their freshly baked doughnuts. Head to the river for more city scenes.
12:30 PM
We love walking through Nishiki Market – it’s busy, it smells delicious, and it’s chaotic. Spot the fun fake food displays. Then find Motoi Gyoza for yes, gyozas. Grab a seat at the counter and order Papa's Gyoza.
2:03 PM
Explore Nijo Castle – go a little later in the day for fewer crowds. En route back to the hotel, dip into a Lawson convenience store and grab an egg sandwich (it's well-loved for a reason). Just don't eat and walk, that's not the done thing here.
4:47 PM
Onsens are a ritual. Take it easy and spend some time soaking in the tub.
8:00 PM
A casual meal at a great Okonomiyaki (a savoury pancake with cabbage and meat or seafood) restaurant, Yasubee. Stroll back to the hotel via the river – Kyoto is even prettier at night.

The 100-year-old machiya was restored with care rather than rebuilt from scratch.
Local artisans and craftspeople led the renovation, preserving traditional techniques.
Calm, pared-back interiors are designed to encourage slower living and mindful stays.
