London's Holborn is where L'Oscar occupies a bold early 1900s building, originally the headquarters of the Baptist Church Union, with interiors by Jacques Garcia that make an immediate and theatrical statement: deep velvets, gilded ceilings, and rich jewel tones throughout. Thirty-nine rooms; a beautiful spa; a very good restaurant. One of the capital's most unusual and memorable hotel addresses.

city trippers, design lovers
8:08 AM
It’s late rising here so take your time and head downstairs to settle into a purple-velvet banquette for pots of coffee and some viennoiserie.
9:33 AM
Covent Garden one way, Bloomsbury the next. Beat the crowds and head out for a walk to the Royal Opera House and the former flower market on the early side to have it to yourself.
12:30 PM
While you’re in this neighbourhood, show up right at the opening for a seat at the counter of The Barbary (sister to Soho’s The Palomar). Plates are made right there and then – order the Jerusalem bagel, to scoop up all the dips with.
2:30 PM
Scuttle on over to the British Museum for floors and floors of brilliant finds and artefacts from around the world. It’s particularly cool to see the Sutton Hoo helmet, and that famous stairwell too.
5:08 PM
Take advantage of your room, these are too pretty to be far away from for long. Jetlagged? The beds are so fluffy napping is made easy.
6:45 PM
Lamb’s Conduit Street is one of our favourites in London. Start with a mosey about Pentreath & Hall for homeware bits before stopping for a glass of wine at Noble Rot, one of the city’s legendary vintners. Their shop Shrine on the Vine, just across the road, is great for picking up bottles to bring home.
8:30 PM
Have a late-night dinner in the mirror-ceilinged restaurant. It turns more sceney the later it gets. Order the salmon crispy rice and miso black cod.
10:00 PM
Chase a Japanese-heavy menu with a cocktail at the golden lit black onyx bar. Their riff on a margarita is delicious, and they’ve swapped tequila for mezcal.
