New Orleans is a city where history seeps through every wall, and this 1883 building is no ordinary hotel. Built as a private residence, it has seen its share of fine folk come through its doors, and the spirit of the city runs through every detail. The line between old-world grandeur and neighbourhood bar blurs here in the most wonderful, distinctly New Orleans way.

a long weekend, a week
An 1883 building in New Orleans. History seeps through every wall.

9:28 AM
We love late starts in New Orleans, as the evenings often stretch a little longer. The coffee here is very good (they partner up with a local roastery). Save up for a ‘late’ breakfast / early lunch.
12:00 PM
A nice walk away is the slushie blue-striped Commander's Palace – a local legend when it comes to the Po’ boy (a classic NOLA sandwich with friend shrimp on crusty white bread). It's also home to the 25-cent Martini…

Jump back on a street car and head to the French Quarter. It’s busy, it’s bustling and this is where the main action happens in the evening. Find Cafe du Monde – it’s a little touristy, and there will be a queue, but wait it out. The beignets really are something else – powdery, doughy, sweet parcels of goodness.
3:40 PM
There are a lot of really cool and interesting design spots around. We particularly admire Hotel Peter and Paul – designed by ASH NYC and StudioWTA; it’s a pattern-happy, colour story inside. Find a bar seat at The Elysian Bar for an afternoon pick-me-up.
7:22 PM
The city is filled with jazz, so join in. There are often little street parties but we like to dip in and out of bars on Frenchman Street.
10:35 PM
It’s a big, indulgent day of food and drink. But, you’re in NOLA, where the Sazerac was invented. It’s a bit like an Old Fashioned but made with rye whiskey (or brandy), bitters, sugar, and absinthe. The hotel bar makes a mean one…

NoLa is a historic city, and The Columns worked hard to preserve and restore its walls. There’s a new garden and patio, with lots of attention to detail.
Each and every room is fitted with antique and vintage pieces – mostly with objects found in the attic of the original building.
They keep it local – from partnering with roasteries to cherry-picking the very best of Louisiana-based brands for their curated gift shop.
