Behind a red brick exterior moments from Sloane Square, this Victorian townhouse hides one of London's more private addresses. Jean-Louis Costes and designer François-Joseph Graf gave it a quietly theatrical overhaul: Loro Piana cashmere curtains, freestanding bathtubs, skylit dining rooms. Upstairs, Les Essentiels Costes runs breakfast to last orders. Below ground, an intimate bar draws a livelier crowd. The kind of address regulars guard closely.

a long weekend, a week

city trippers, design lovers
7:58 AM
Order breakfast in bed (why not, you’re on holiday). Trays arrive topped with freshly baked croissants, costes jams, and a perfectly brewed pot of tea. How English.
10:08 AM
You’re right at Sloane Gardens, so the location couldn’t be more perfect – within minutes, you’re in Sloane Square, surrounded by all the best boutiques. Wander down the King’s Road, popping into chic shops and local designer (fashion and interiors) spots.
12:37 PM
We love Colbert, an all-day favourite right on Sloane Square. There’s always a famous face in the corner. Grab lunch at the bar (the best seat in the house) and order a thick bowl of French onion soup and a big bowl of fries. That’s all.
2:46 PM
Head over to the Saatchi Gallery, one of London’s edgiest and most colourful art spaces to see rotating exhibitions. Past hits have included a Rolling Stones retrospective and a comprehensive graffiti and street art collection.
7:03 PM
As the day winds down, return to ...At Sloane to freshen up. Early evening calls for a cocktail. Descend a discreet staircase to a dimly lit space decked in plush red velvet and antique decor. Sliding into the private snug rooms, it feels like you’ve entered a 1920s speakeasy.
8:00 PM
Tonight, you’re local. Stay convenient for the charm of Costes. The staff greet you like an old friend and will seat you at what feels like a secret table in a cosy private dining cupola room (complete with those famous porcelain vases surrounding you). By the end of the meal, you’ll be happily full and grateful you only have to head downstairs to be ‘home’.

This was a pretty big renovation, but the team of designers carefully preserved and respected the 300-year-old red-brick balcony-clad facade.
There are around 50 custom-made fabrics imported from France, antique vases, and hand-painted friezes, supporting artisanal craftsmanship and reducing the environmental impact of mass production.
Not your average hotel window, these rooms are designed to maximise natural light with handmade stained-glass panels and electronically operated drapes, reducing reliance on artificial lighting.
