The Izu spa town of Shuzenji is home to Asaba, one of Japan's oldest and most beautiful ryokans: in the same family for over 540 years, just 12 rooms, and an extraordinary sense of accumulated care. The Noh stage in the garden, the private open-air hot springs, and the meticulous kaiseki dinners make this a genuinely unmissable and deeply moving Japanese experience.

a long weekend, a week
In the same family for over 540 years. Just 12 rooms.

8:10 AM
In true Ryokan style, breakfast is brought to your room by your room attendant, and it’s a traditional Japanese one: rice, grilled fish, omelette, miso soup, and pickled vegetables. You can also opt for a Western-style breakfast, but that would be ill-advised.
9:26 AM
Founded in the 9th century, destroyed and rebuilt a few times, this Zen Buddhist temple carries a history marked by samurai family tragedies. But the drama is long gone – today, it's a peaceful and deeply contemplative place.
12:30 PM
For lunch, head to YAMABIKO. The surrounding area is known for soba noodles (the water found here is great for them) so it’s guaranteed to be delicious. Don’t forget to order the seasonal vegetable tempura as ingredients are organic and sourced nearby.
2:58 PM
Hot springs are serious business here and an absolute must, especially since Asaba Ryokan has its own private one. Take note: you’ll need to leave your bathing suit in your room and cover any tattoos before entering.
5:23 PM
If you’re lucky, there’ll be a performance during your stay. Asaba Ryokan regularly invites leading masters of traditional Japanese performing arts, such as Noh (classical Japanese theatre) or traditional dance, to take the stage.
7:00 PM
The food at Asaba Ryokan is made even more special by the ritual of in-room service. Expect a kaiseki-style meal, with multiple courses (eleven, to be exact). You can even keep the menu, beautifully written in a Hanko stamp calligraphy, as a souvenir.

Asaba places serious importance on the food they prepare, using only the finest local ingredients that are gathered from the foothills of Mount Fuji to Suruga Bay, the Kano River, the Amagi mountains, and the lands of Izu.
The ryokan release on natural healing, offering various baths filled with continuously flowing water from the Shuzenji hot spring.
They preserve the tradition of performance. Guests can enjoy Japanese arts such as Noh, Kyōgen comedy, Shinnai storytelling, and Japanese dance in breathtaking seasonal performances.
