Forty-five minutes south of Paris, a Cistercian abbey abandoned during the French Revolution and recently reborn under the smart team behind Paris Society, Abbaye des Vaux-de-Cernay is close enough to the capital for a spontaneous long weekend while surrounded by enough authentic countryside to feel like a genuine escape. The cloisters, the lake, and the parkland forest are truly extraordinary.

a long weekend, a week
A Cistercian abbey abandoned during the French Revolution and recently reborn.
country living, wellness junkies, slow travel
8:13 AM
Start your day with a big stretch yoga session in the abbey gardens or a stroll around the grounds (there’s even a mudroom full of Wellington boots for guests to borrow if it's rainy). Oh so English manor.
9:43 AM
Ah French breakfasts…this one at Le Réfectoire des Moines has a particularly magical atmosphere. It’s very Hogwarts with the candle-filled arches and stoney great hall feel.
11:18 AM
Take to the lake. The rowing boats are as sweet as they come. Just be careful to not rock it too much.
12:30 PM
Lunch at James’ Bar. Get comfortable inside with a boardgame or when the sun is out, claim a terrace table. The Croque-monsieur is one of the best we’ve had…
2:15 PM
Take a dip in the outdoor pool or slip away for something needed in the spa – we love the Tata Harper facial. Don't forget to make the most of the sound menu too.
4:26 PM
It's time for a an indulgent afternoon tea. Enjoy a hot drink and a slice of their signature tart while taking in the beautiful, historic surroundings.
8:15 PM
Wrap up the day with a cosy dinner at L'Auberge – we often start with the frisée salad before ordering the roast chicken. For something a little fancier, book dinner at Les Chasses, set in the former hunting lodge.

This is a no AC hotel, rather there are fans you can use when the summer heat rolls in.
Now this is an impressive collection of vintage furniture. Many of which have been sourced from flea markets over the years.
Local producers and crafters set up brocante stalls and vegetable markets on the weekends so Parisians (and foreigners) don’t head home to an empty pantry.
